Clearly in the distortion field - Macworld SanFrancisco

Now, for the main event

The force is stronger than evaa and reflected clearly in AAPL stock price today. Apple is, of course, no longer just a computer company.

Apple Inc. is taking lessons learned in transforming the music industry to the equally-crusty world of television and movie distribution worlds with AppleTV.

For the biggest and most anticipated news of Macworld, Apple is re-creating the mobile phone and setting off shockwaves throughout the industry. The iPhone is well- streamlining music portability, simplifying syncronization, and knocking the socks off Nokia, SonyEricsson best design efforts.

Wow is still on the tongues of many this morning in a part of the world where everyone is used to living on the edge and having the latest gadgets. This is a game changing week for sure.

We will soon be learning more about what on iPhone and AppleTV will be open to developers. The upside to the long wait on the phone is the time for integration with web services and OSX applications.

OLPC (One Laptop Per Child, aka "Hundred Dollar Laptop" - now $130.

It's great to see this green machine lit up with a nice color screen with its Apple-like form factor. I only wish it was already available for purchase in the U.S. It would make a great portable for my kids. I'd also like to tinker with the installed Linux-based OS and GUI. The YouTube preview was interesting. There's also a rant on Diggnation about the dumbed-down features - clearly OLPC is not intended for Bay Area web geeks!

SXSW: January parties to heat things up

Interactive
SXSW Interactive '06 was a really happening time with loads of great speakers and panels (but you already knew that). There were lots of opportunities to hang out and meet new people folks making things happen on the web. I'm guessing many more will make the trek to Austin this year after favorable reviews and what's sure to be an even hotter year for web startups - post GooTube and all.

So, just after Christmas we'll roll into a new season with CES, followed by a will-rock Macworld, and then the SXSW party in SF. Thanks to Brian for the heads up on the SF party and congrats to him for having his panel selected: "ValleySpeak for the Rest of Us: Developing Apps Outside InternetVille." (all panels here)

March 9th feels like soon. The 2007 sessions are stacked deep with great speakers, designers, bloggers, and of course web app haXors.

SXSW is getting rolling early with events in Chicago, Austin, SF, and NYC. The San Francisco party is sure to have a full house. Now would be a great time to have that SF "landing pad" I advocate in order. Failing that coming together, I need to find a place to stay!

2006 marked the first-ever SXSW / Western Connections reception in San Francisco. We are back for a second go-round in 2007. Join the SXSW Interactive crew on Monday, January 15 as we network with some of the most interesting and most creative geeks in the Bay Area. Time and location of event to be announced shortly. If you are a San Francisco-based geek and you'd like an invite to this event, email inter at sxsw dot com.

EV-DO for MacBook via USB

Novatel Ev-Do UsbI knew this MacBook was too good of a deal!  I forgot about needing a slot for an EV-DO card. A buddy just mentioned they were now available as USB devices. As a T-Mobile customer, I'm just wondering if I want to belly up for a Sprin 2-year contract but it's tough to argue with 342KB from anywhere except Yosemite!

CrunchGear » Blog Archive » Sprint U720 Brings EV-DO Rev. A to USB:

"Mr. Davies from SlashGear was able to get a not unimpressive 342Kbps down and 127Kbps up. Also notable is the fact that he was able to run it on OS X. So I guess if you count yourself among that mass of Apple users who can’t use all the cool hardware out there, such as most wireless broadband cards, this could be a solution for you."

iPhone getting real?

Engadet WWJD 3 - iPhone
Originally uploaded by shirster.
Something besides iPod Christmas sales have the market buzzing over AAPL - up nearly $30 since its nadir of $50.16 in mid-July. I think the excitement is due to continue iPod dominance, iTV, and increasing belief that we will see a handset soon.

Bill Burcham Gordita Google Reader

I've been using Google Reader as my primary news reader for what must be about a month now. Thankfully, news of enhancements made the TechMeme cut. Based on very positive blogger reviews, I decided to give it a shot (just two weeks after paying for NewFire - argh!) Besides some oddities with hanging in Firefox v.2, GReader been working great -- but this isn't a review of Google Reader. I just wanted to point out some work that a local buddy, Bill Burcham, has released: Gordita. It solves that little problem a linking out to del.icio.us (a Yahoo! service now) from within an embedded GReader news item. Pukka won't get you outta this pickle.

To address the lack of Google Reader integration, I’ve created yet another bookmarklet generator. This one generates a Google Reader Del.icio.us Tagging bookmarklet — a Gordita.

Now I just need to grab the nightly build of FF 2.0 to the tagging window to pop-over instead of behind the browser window.

So, what's wrong with this picture... it looks a bit more like the population distribution of Australia than a map of the USA. At Chicago made the cut but surely Cocoa devs register significantly in other parts of the country....
